Dar Es Salaam

🇹🇿 Day 1:  An overnight flight delivers us into the bustling city of Dar Es Salaam for a relaxed start to the day before taking ourselves to the Fish Market for some local colour and a good, fresh lunch. In the afternoon, we shall visit the National Museum to remind ourselves of Tanzania's central role in the history of mankind, before a comfortable coffee stop and then a walk back through the extraordinary Kariakoo market area, passing some impressive monuments and a couple of iconic churches on the way. Our comfortable hotel, in the heart of the market area,  will allow us downtime and a peaceful dinner, before we prepare for onward travels on Day 2.

Thank you for a fantastic holiday - so varied and interesting. I have many happy memories and will look forward to collating my photos
Bagamoyo

🇹🇿 Day 2:  We are heading to the historic seaside town of Bagamoyo today, a couple of hours drive to the north of the city, where we shall learn of the history of this area of the Indian Ocean, with a couple of hours of guided tour led by an expert who really knows the town and its dramatic past. He will show us winding streets with ancient Arab buildings, artists at work in their studios, the German colonial Boma, and the Old Fort that is very much associated with the nineteenth-century slave trade that was so prevalent on this coastline.

There are some comfortable and characterful restaurants and coffee shops in the centre of this laid-back little town that will make sure we are well-catered for in this attractive spot. We shall stay one night on the edge of town, at the welcoming and relaxed Colobus View Lodge.

Zanzibar - Stone Town

🇹🇿 Days 3 and 4:  We drive back to Dar Es Salaam this morning and our vehicle leaves us at the seaport ready for the boat crossing that will take us to the main focus of our first week of this very special tour, the exotic and hugely stylish island of Zanzibar, world-famous as the main source of the cloves and other spices that were so prized in earlier times. After a pleasant hour and a half of sea crossing, we shall check into our fine, historic hotel in the heart of this wonderfully colourful town of winding streets, ancient and beautiful carved doors, and so much to explore and enjoy. We have two comfortable and luxurious nights here, and we shall again employ a local expert to make sure of our appreciation of all we see, although we shall also have plenty of time for personal exploration. There is even a museum here that is dedicated to Farrokh Bolsara (somewhat better known as Freddie Mercury of 'Queen' fame, for those who feel so attracted!) The whole town is ancient, colourful and truly magical!

Thank you so much for such an incredible time and for being so informative, entertaining, and kind. I've been looking through all my many photos today and reliving the holiday.

Zanzibar - Paje

🇹🇿 Days 5 and 6: The island of Zanzibar is a scenic haven in so many ways, and today we travel to the east from Stone Town to spend a couple of nights in the attractive and relaxed seaside town of Paje, right on the coastline. Silver sands, excellent tourist facilities, the chance to swim or sunbathe, lots of potential for exploration and walking - this is a thoroughly appealing place to spend a central pause on our tour.

But before we arrive, about an hour and a half along the route, we are going to visit a very special area of national park, for an expertly guided tour of this very select region - the critically endangered Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey, amazing birds and butterflies, forest trails, and a wonderful Spice Farm where we can pick up fresh and varied ingredients to take home - all these are on offer. We'll either lunch here on the Spice Farm, or await our arrival in Paje, about a thirty-minute onward drive.

🇹🇿 Day 6 will be a day of individual choices, with plenty of colourful attractions on offer - swimming, perhaps a sauna, seaside strolls, and plenty of colourful souvenir shopping. Your hotel base will provide you with an excellent and luxurious stay for two nights - stylish comfort!

Arusha

🇹🇿 Day 7:  We return to Stone Town today, back through attractive countryside and then on towards the local airport where we are due to take our one domestic flight, linking us to the second phase of our 'Zanzibar and Tanzania Trail', into the northern part of Tanzania, and to what is generally considered the tourist centre of the country, the very attractive and vibrant city of Arusha. Our activities on this sixth day will largely depend on our flight schedule, but Arusha is a very pleasant place to explore, and our hotel is again comfortable and peaceful here.

Days 8: Our two main days in this city will be full of activity and exploration. We shall have a knowledgeable local guide once again to show us round the many and varied sites of interest to the visitor - an excellent and characterful museum, a huge and colourful Maasai Market selling attractive and good quality goods of great appeal, and then the jewel of Arusha, the huge and  modern Cultural Heritage Centre, sometimes referred to as the 'African Guggenheim', the largest and most diverse gallery of arts on the African continent. It is truly mind-boggling! We shall almost certainly have a good lunch here also, to give further time for visiting its amazing collections.

Day 9: We are continuing our visits outside the city today. We shall visit the wonderful Shanga Centre where people with certain disabilities work on the production of recycled artefacts - glass-blowing, weaving and fabrics, paper-making - and all of the truly original and desirable items on sale to the general public in support of this very sophisticated and truly admirable project. Moving a little further away from the city itself, we shall have a double experience at the Snake Park and Maasai Village Centre. The park is an important centre for scientific work on anti-venoms, with a huge range of African snakes in their collection, while the much less sophisticated Maasai Village display provides a wonderful and characterful guided display of the Maasai culture, a brief but thoroughly enjoyable visit.

What a wonderfully exciting trip you gave us.
Certainly the most varied ever!
Completely unforgettable in all its aspects.
Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater

🇰🇪 Days 9 and 10:  The climax of our 'Zanzibar and Tanzania Trail' takes place in the extensive and important area of wildlife conservation, referred to as the Northern Safari Circuit, up in the north-western corner of the country, Our very experienced Arusha-based agents will be making sure of an impressive experience for us. On the first of these two extraordinary days, we transfer to our safari vehicles and, after a few hours of travel, we find ourselves in the Tarangire National Park. The park is particularly known for its vast herds of elephant and iconic baobab trees, but we shall also expect to have sightings of wildebeest, zebra, Cape buffalo, hartebeest, and gazelles. The birdlife here is also very special. We shall spend the night in a particularly comfortable hotel in the small town of Karatu, ready for the climax of our tour on the following day.

🇰🇪 Day 11:  The world-famous Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most extraordinary sights in Africa, the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. The floor of the crater covers more than 100 square miles, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has one of the highest densities of lions in the world, but is also one of the most reliable places for seeing the Big Five in a single day - the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and the endangered black rhinoceros. We can't promise you that you will tick them all off your list, but we can assure you of some truly exciting and wonderful experiences during our extended drive in the crater, securely guided by our expert friends in this area.

🇰🇪 Day 12:  Our 'Zanzibar and Tanzania Trail' is nearly at an end, and we are moving towards our homeward flights, departing from Kilimanjaro Airport, a relatively short distance from the crater. Whether we shall have a second night in Karatu, or whether the flights schedule will allow us to begin our final journey back to home comforts will depend on what we find at the time of booking. But whatever our final movements, we can be assured of a truly extraordinary and varied memory bank to take home with us.

Note:

  • Flight costs can never be known with accuracy in advance, but we are expecting return international flights + the single domestic flight + the sea-crossing to Zanzibar to come out at a total of about £1000 per person.

  • The cost of the tourist visa at the present time is about $50.
