Dar Es Salaam

🇹🇿 Day 1:  An overnight flight delivers us into the bustling city of Dar Es Salaam for a relaxed start to the day and a restorative lunch. In the afternoon, we shall get to know this bustling city somewhat, visiting the impressive Catholic cathedral of St. Josephs before a comfortable coffee stop and a walk back through the extraordinary Kariakoo market area. Our comfortable hotel, in the heart of that market area,  will allow us downtime and a peaceful dinner, before we prepare for onward travels on Day 2.

Thank you for a fantastic holiday - so varied and interesting. I have many happy memories and will look forward to collating my photos
Bagamoyo

🇹🇿 Day 2:  We are heading to the historic seaside town of Bagamoyo today, a couple of hours drive to the north of the city, where we shall learn of the history of this area of the Indian Ocean, with a couple of hours of guided tour led by an expert who really knows the town and its dramatic past. He will show us winding streets with ancient Arab buildings, artists at work in their studios, the German colonial Boma, and the Old Fort that is very much associated with the nineteenth-century slave trade that was so prevalent on this coastline.

There are some comfortable and characterful restaurants and coffee shops in the centre of this laid-back little town that will make sure we are well-catered for here. We shall stay just one night on the edge of town, at the welcoming and relaxed Colobus View Lodge.

Zanzibar - Stone Town

🇹🇿 Days 3 and 4:  We drive back to Dar Es Salaam this morning and our vehicle leaves us at the seaport ready for the boat crossing that will take us to the main focus of our first week of this very special tour, the exotic and hugely stylish island of Zanzibar, world-famous as the main source of the cloves and other spices that were so prized in earlier times. After a pleasant hour and a half of sea crossing, we shall check into our truly extraordinary, historic hotel in the heart of this wonderfully colourful town of winding streets, ancient and beautiful carved doors, and so much else to explore and enjoy. We have two comfortable and luxurious nights here, and we shall again employ a local expert to make sure of our appreciation of all we see, although we shall also have plenty of time for personal exploration. There is even a museum here that is dedicated to Farrokh Bolsara (somewhat better known as Freddie Mercury of 'Queen' fame, for those who feel so attracted!) The whole town is ancient, colourful and truly magical!

Thank you so much for such an incredible time and for being so informative, entertaining, and kind. I've been looking through all my many photos today and reliving the holiday.

Zanzibar - Paje

🇹🇿 Day 5 : The island of Zanzibar is a scenic haven in so many ways, and today we travel out of Stone Town to the attractive and relaxed seaside town of Paje, right on the eastern coastline. Silver sands, excellent tourist facilities, the chance to swim or sunbathe, perhaps a sauna, plenty of colourful souvenir shopping, and lots of potential for exploration and walking. This is a thoroughly appealing place to spend a central pause on the tour, and the choice of activities will be entirely yours.

🇹🇿 Day 6 :  We have no reason to hurry away today but, as soon as we are ready, we are going to start back towards Stone Town. As we do so, we'll be looking out for some of this area's most attractive inhabitants, the Red Colobus monkeys which are often easy to spot up in the trees, right by the roadside. We shall adjust our compass a little after that in order to take us for a truly memorable visit to one of Zanzibar's spice farms, to the north of Stone Town, and one that is as well known for its characterful owner (his name is Big Body!) as for its scenic forest paths and fascinating products. But we shall eventually find our way back to Zanzibar's capital city and to our luxurious hotel there for one more night. If flight schedules remain as they have been, we shall have a fairly early domestic flight the next morning, taking us onto the second phase of our tour, our flight to the north of Tanzania, to Arusha, the undisputed wildlife capital of Tanzania.

Arusha

🇹🇿 Day 7:  Arusha is generally considered to be the tourist centre of the country, despite its geographical position right up in the north-east. It is certainly a very attractive and vibrant city and we shall have plenty of time to explore. Our hotel for three nights is again comfortable and very peaceful, and we have plenty of time to find out all about this very special city. We shall leave a flexible schedule on our arrival day to allow us full recovery time from our rather early start.

Days 8: Our two main days in this city will be full of activity and exploration. We shall concentrate our activities in the heart of the city on the first of these days, with knowledgeable guides to show us round the many and varied sites of interest to the visitor - an excellent and characterful museum, a large and colourful Maasai Market selling attractive and good quality goods of great appeal, and then the jewel of Arusha, the huge and modern Cultural Heritage Centre, sometimes referred to as the 'African Guggenheim', the largest and most diverse gallery of arts on the African continent. It is truly mind-boggling! We shall almost certainly have a good lunch here, to give time in the afternoon for visiting its amazing collections.

Day 9:  Today we shall take our explorations outside of the city, visiting first a characterful Maasai village where we shall have a chance not only to find out about this tribe's unique way of living, but also to see the snake park on the same site, an establishment which is a crucial African scientific resource for the production of anti-venoms, with a knowledgeable and interesting guide to show us round. And then we move to the extraordinary Shanga Arts and Crafts Centre, a social enterprise where people with a variety of disabilities are employed to create unique and high-quality handmade jewellery, glassware and homewares incorporating recycled materials. All in all, this is a day of fascinating and thought-provoking variety.

What a wonderfully exciting trip you gave us.
Certainly the most varied ever!
Completely unforgettable in all its aspects.
Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater

🇰🇪 Day 10:  The climax of our 'Zanzibar/Tanzania Trail' takes place in the extensive and important area of wildlife conservation, referred to as the Northern Safari Circuit, up in the north-western corner of the country, Our very experienced Arusha-based agents will be making sure of an impressive experience for you. On the first of your extraordinary days in this area, you'll transfer to safari vehicles and, after a few hours of travel, you'll find yourselves in the Tarangire National Park. The park is particularly known for its vast herds of elephant and iconic baobab trees, but you'll also expect to have sightings of wildebeest, zebra, Cape buffalo, hartebeest, and gazelles. The birdlife here is also very special. Your night will be spent in a particularly comfortable hotel near the small town of Karatu, ready for the climax of our tour on the following day.

🇰🇪 Day 11:  The world-famous Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most extraordinary sights in Africa, the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. The floor of the crater covers more than 100 square miles, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has one of the highest densities of lions in the world, but is also one of the most reliable places for seeing the Big Five in a single day - the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and the endangered black rhinoceros. We can't promise you that you'll tick them all off your list, but we can assure you of some truly exciting and wonderful experiences during the extended drive in the crater, securely guided by an expert driver/guide. At the end of this thoroughly memorable day, you will return to Arusha for one more comfortable night (flight schedules allowing) and a very relaxed evening to share experiences.

🇰🇪 Day 12:  Your 'Zanzibar/Tanzania Trail' is at an end, and you are moving towards your homeward flight, departing from Kilimanjaro Airport. We hope for a relaxed start from Arusha to catch the afternoon flight, taking with you a truly extraordinary bank of memories.

Note:

  • Flight costs can never be known with accuracy in advance, but we are expecting return international flights + the single domestic flight + the sea-crossing to Zanzibar to come out at a total of something just over £1000 per person.

  • The cost of the tourist visa at the present time is about $50.
